Margarita in hand, Sombrero on head and feet in the sands of Mexico, this is my idea of birthday bliss. Flashback to April 2015, I was enjoying this little Mexican moment for my 27th birthday in Playa del Carmen at the Gran Porto (all inclusive) resort and naturally I had to get in theme.
Easily one of the best places I went to during my America trip, we picked Playa del Carmen as our Mexico destination as it’s easy access from Cancun (just a 40 minute drive) and close to the gorgeous Tulum and Akumal Beach where you can see the ancient ruins and go snorkeling with the sea turtles.
The Gran Porto had a fantastic excursion service, where we booked a day trip to Tulum and Akumal Beach. Our tour guide who worked with his grandson were brilliant and even taught us a few words in Spanish (all completely inappropriate to mention). The highlight was an amazing Cenote experience where we were taken off the beaten track to a private Cenote with no other tourists.
The location of this resort was also one of the best. Just a quick 5 minute walk up the road and we were in the hub of the town, dense with markets stalls. I absolutely adore the traditional floral embroidery and leather goods, so couldn’t resist stocking up. Due to it being a tourist area, it’s not as cheap as expected but with a little bartering, you can still get a great deal.
